International Rice Research Institute (IRRI)

The International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) is a non-profit independent rice research and training organization. The genebank at IRRI has the largest collection of rice in the world.

Mission
The mission of IRRI is to reduce poverty and hunger, improve the health of rice farmers and consumers, and ensure environmental sustainability through collaborative research, partnerships, and the strengthening of national agricultural research and extension systems.

Rice Improvement
IRRI develops new rice varieties and rice crop management techniques that help rice farmers improve the yield and quality of their rice in an environmentally sustainable way. IRRI works with its public and private sector partners in national agricultural research and extension systems in major rice-growing countries to do research, training, and knowledge transfer. Social and economic research at IRRI also informs governments to help them formulate policy to improve the equitable supply of rice. The genebank collection continues to grow in size and usage, with more than 181,000 samples shipped to 65 countries over the last 5 years.

Crop Trust Support
The Crop Trust provides a long-term grant for the conservation of the international collection of rice at IRRI in the Philippines.
