Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka has a population of over 22.2 million. Its natural vegetation covers about one-third of the total land area. The virgin forests of Sri Lanka are rich in their variety and profusion of flora and fauna.
Rice production is the most important economic activity of Sri Lanka’s peasantry. Plantation agriculture has continued to figure prominently in the economy of Sri Lanka; but it is in decline. The preeminent crop of the plantation sector is tea, followed by rubber and coconut.
38-45% of the food energy consumed in Sri Lanka comes from crops that are not native to the region. Most of these plants’ diversity is found elsewhere on the planet.
