Portugal has a population of over 10.8 million.

The main crops grown in Portugal are cereals (wheat, barley, corn (maize) and rice), potatoes, grapes (for wine), olives and tomatoes. Crop yields, however, are well below the EU average, due to low agricultural investment, minimal mechanization, little use of fertilizers, and the fragmented land-tenure system.

Portugal is among the world’s largest exporters of tomato paste and is a leading exporter of wines.

79-91% of the food energy consumed in Portugal comes from crops that are not native to the region. Most of these plants’ diversity is found elsewhere on the planet.
