Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso has a population of over 19.5 million.
About nine-tenths of the population is engaged in subsistence agriculture or livestock raising. The majority of agricultural production consists of subsistence foodstuffs, with the surplus being sold as cash crops. Surplus cotton, shea nuts, sesame and sugarcane are exported, while sorghum, millet, corn (maize), peanuts (groundnuts) and rice are grown for local consumption. Fonio (a crabgrass with seeds that are used as cereal), cassava (manioc), sweet potatoes and beans are also grown.
23-32% of the food energy consumed in Burkina Faso comes from crops that are not native to the region. Most of these plants’ diversity is found elsewhere on the planet.
