A farmer of the Thái ethnic group carries tree seedlings to be planted between fields of cassava in Sơn La Province. The many minority groups of this remote and mountainous region practice diverse farming systems that often include cassava as a key part. Over 90% of rice fields in the country are planted with modern varieties, usually bred with a very mixed ancestry from other regions of the world. This unique sample is now included in the Crop Wild Relatives pre-breeding trials at INIA Kampenaike. Tolerance to drought and frost are traits that researchers are looking for in Magallanes. In the central part of Chile, researchers are searching for drought and heat tolerance.
